The Security Council adopts a resolution demanding that the Houthis stop their attacks on commercial ships

Last night, the UN Security Council renewed its call on the Houthis to immediately stop all their attacks against commercial ships, and to work towards the immediate release of the ship “Galaxy Leader” and its crew.

This came during a new resolution, adopted by the Council with the support of 12 countries and the abstention of Russia, China and Algeria from voting, during which the Council renewed its condemnation of the Houthi attacks, as well as the mechanism for reporting them in accordance with Paragraph 10 of its previous resolution, which bears the number 2722 (2024).

The new Council resolution, which bore the code No. 2768 for the year “2025,” stressed the need to address the root causes of these attacks, including conflicts that contribute to regional tensions and disrupt maritime security, in order to ensure a rapid, efficient and effective response.

The Council acknowledged its observation that the Houthis used advanced weapons in their attacks, and in this regard reiterated its call on all countries to stop providing weapons to the Houthis, and the need for them to adhere to their obligations with regard to the targeted arms embargo stipulated in its resolution 2216, and to prevent the Houthis from obtaining weapons and related materials to implement further attacks. These attacks.

The Council’s resolution also urged caution and restraint, to avoid further escalation of the situation in the Red Sea and the wider region, and encouraged strengthened diplomatic efforts by all parties to this end, including continued support for the dialogue and the peace process in Yemen under the auspices of the United Nations.
