FIFA launches the “Peace Prize” at the World Cup draw ceremony

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced the creation of a Peace Prize, which will be awarded for the first time during the World Cup draw ceremony scheduled for December 5 in Washington, DC.

The Federation explained that the “FIFA Peace Prize” will be awarded in honor of “exceptional works for peace,” adding that Federation President Gianni Infantino will present the award this year himself.

But Infantino, who has a close relationship with US President Donald Trump, refused to reveal who will be the first to receive the award, saying: “On December 5, you will see.”

His speech came during the American Business Forum in Miami, shortly after Trump delivered his speech at the same event.

Infantino said in his previous statements on Wednesday: “In a world witnessing increasing turmoil and divisions, it is necessary to honor those who contribute in an effort to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace.”

FIFA indicated that the award will be given annually “on behalf of football fans around the world.”

This announcement comes a month after the Nobel Committee bypassed Trump when awarding the Nobel Peace Prize, despite support campaigns led by some Republicans and world leaders, in addition to Trump himself.

Infantino did not hide his close relationship with Trump, as he said: “I am really lucky. My relationship with President Trump is excellent, and I consider him a close friend. He has been a great supporter of everything we do in preparing for the World Cup… He has amazing energy, and I admire him very much. He does what he says, and says what he thinks. Rather, he says what many people think but do not dare to say, and that is why he is so successful.”
