White House: Trump spoke by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping

A White House official confirmed that US President Donald Trump, Monday morning, held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, without revealing the reasons for setting the date or the party that requested the call.

 

Washington did not release any details about the topics of discussion, but the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement reported by NBC News, that the two sides “are implementing all the elements agreed upon.” During their last meeting in the city of Busan, South Korea, last month.

The two parties then reached understandings that included the United States reducing customs duties imposed on Chinese goods, in exchange for Beijing stopping imposing new restrictions on exports of rare earth metals, in a move aimed at calming tension in the protracted trade war between the two countries.

The statement added that “the relationship between China and the United States has generally maintained a stable and positive path.” Since the Busan meeting.

The call also dealt with the Ukraine issue, in light of the ongoing talks between Kiev and Washington regarding a peace plan that the Trump administration wants to reach before Thanksgiving. Beijing said that President Xi “stressed China’s support for all efforts aimed at achieving peace.”

The Chinese President reiterated his country’s position on Taiwan, stressing the necessity of its “return to China,” while the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Trump as saying that the United States “realizes how important the Taiwan issue is to China.”

Trump also described his Chinese counterpart as a “great leader,” according to what was stated in the Chinese statement.
