المملكة: Jeddah Astronomy: Today the moon is in the first quarter phase in the sky of the Arab world

Astronomical societies in the Arab world are observing a remarkable astronomical scene today, Friday, November 28, 2025, as The Moonis in the first quarter phase of the month of Jumada al-Akhirah, according to what was explained by the President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra.
Abu Zahira indicated that the Moon will reach the moment of first quarter at 09:58 AM Mecca time (06:58 AM GMT), so that it will have completed a quarter of its orbit around the Earth in this lunar month.
After this moment, the Moon will begin to rise. Gradually, it rises from the north-northeast horizon during the afternoon, before taking its place at its highest point in The skyafter sunset, tilted towards the southern side.
Observing the details of the moon
Abu Zahra confirms that the first quarter phase is an ideal opportunity for amateurs and photographers to observe the details of the moon’s surface, as half of its disk is illuminated while the other half remains in the shadow, which clearly shows the craters and lunar mountains extending on the line separating light and darkness. This contrast highlights the features of the terrain in three dimensions, allowing an accurate and enjoyable viewing of geographical features.
To achieve the best viewing, it is recommended to use binoculars or a small telescope, with the lens aperture ranging between 4 and 6 inches, as this size allows the craters and prominent terrain to be seen clearly. The use of optical filters is also an option to help increase surface contrast and highlight details to a greater degree.
The association added that the coming days will witness an expansion of the angular distance between the moon and the sun, as the moon gradually advances towards the full moon phase, and will later begin to rise with sunset instead of its appearance in the afternoon, in an astronomical spectacle awaited by those interested in the sky and moon lovers.
