12 million stray dogs are disturbing Egyptians…and the government is intervening to end the “nightmare”

The phenomenon of the spread of stray dogs continues to worry many Egyptians, who over the past years have been subjected to repeated sting attacks, some of which have caused tragic deaths as a result of the diseases these dogs carry..
This state of hostility towards passers-by has prompted many Egyptians to launch individual initiatives to confront this nightmare spreading throughout Egypt (in the words of social media pioneers), by establishing associations to care for these dogs or vaccinate them to reduce the risks resulting from their necking. However, these attempts did not succeed sufficiently in containing this phenomenon, which caused pain to many Egyptians.
In the latest chapter in efforts to contain the stray dog crisis in Egypt, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a campaign to combat this phenomenon. Egyptian media quoted the Director General of the General Department of Animal Welfare at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Al-Husseini Mohamed Awad, as saying that the campaign aims to protect citizens and reduce the number of dogs through organized programs for vaccination against rabies, in addition to sterilization and re-releasing them in their original areas in a scientific and safe manner. He stressed that the goal is not to eliminate dogs, but rather to deal with them according to controls to maintain environmental balance and public health.
Al-Husseini confirmed that the number of stray dogs in Egypt ranges between 10 and 12 million according to official statistics, pointing out that the numbers do not include all villages and cities, and that there is an annual increase in the number of stray dogs ranging between 20 and 25%. As for the latest developments in the national campaign, he explained that it was divided into clear time stages: a short-term plan from 6 months to a year, a medium-term plan extending for three years, and a long-term plan ranging between 5 and 7 years, all of which are subject to the oversight of the House of Representatives.
