Investing in knowledge and science.
His Excellency Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Government Summit, stressed in his speech during the opening of the World Summit of Scientists that the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, has made the UAE an incubator for the human mind and a forum for global thought, appreciating His Highness’s continued support for science and scientists.
His Excellency said that the UAE believes that building nations is not based on resources alone, but rather on people, and that the greatest investment in the future is investment in knowledge and science… a country that is reconciled with science, and believes that knowledge is the shortest path to prosperity and that research and openness to minds are indispensable pillars for building a strong nation capable of excellence, excellence and continuity.
His Excellency added that the path of human knowledge is witnessing a radical transformation today, as the acceleration of artificial intelligence developments and the human aspiration for a long, healthy life impose new scientific approaches, pointing out that the traditional boundaries separating physicists, computing scientists, and biologists have begun to collapse, and if they remain, we must be the ones to cross them.
His Excellency Mohammed Al Gergawi stressed that the World Summit of Scientists gains its value and historical importance because it is held in light of this delicate stage in which humanity is witnessing political transformations, technological accelerations, and unprecedented economic changes, and in which anxiety about the future of humanity increases, and in such moments, the role of scientists is not only essential, but crucial.
His Excellency said: Our meeting today sends a message of hope to humanity: a message that says that man, despite the noise that fills the world, is still capable of choosing the path of reason and wisdom, and working to improve this world, and here the spirit of the UAE intersects with the spirit of this scientific gathering. Together we do not look to the past as a ceiling, but rather to the future as a responsibility. Together we believe that hope is not expected, but rather created, and that progress does not happen by chance, but rather as a result of joint work, a clear vision, and faith in man.
His Excellency extended his thanks and appreciation to the scientists participating in the summit for choosing to be part of hope, and part of a future that we want to be more humane, more just, and more scientific. A new headquarters for the International Association of Senior Scientists in the Emirates.
For his part, Professor Roger Kornberg, President of the International Association of Senior Scientists, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006, and professor of medicine at Stanford University, revealed that the Association will establish a new headquarters in the Emirates, which will contribute to bringing together scientists from all over the world and consolidating the country’s position as a global center for scientific cooperation, research and innovation. He said: “The Emirates not only keeps pace with the future of science, but also contributes to charting and directing its path.”
During his opening speech at the World Summit of Scientists, Professor Roger Kornberg stressed that the summit is an exceptional gathering, unprecedented in terms of size and diversity, and is distinguished by the breadth of its scientific scope, as it brings together an elite group of scientists from various disciplines, pointing out that such a comprehensive and diverse scientific meeting is an exceptional meeting the likes of which the world rarely witnesses.
He said that this summit creates a unique space in which scientific discovery meets the decision-making process, as it is also characterized by bringing together science on the one hand and governments and the industrial and financial sectors on the other hand. Scientists rarely have the opportunity for direct dialogue with decision-makers at this high level, and our ambition is to build a bridge between the two parties and align scientific evidence with implementation mechanisms.
Professor Roger Kornberg added that the aim of organizing the summit is not limited to explaining science, but also to discuss issues of broad societal importance, which is what the summit sessions will reflect, which will raise major questions such as: Can artificial intelligence achieve real discoveries? Can science save planet Earth? Are we approaching the end of diseases? These questions contribute to bringing the voice of science beyond the conference halls.
Professor Kornberg stressed the importance of the partnership with the World Government Summit, which includes bringing together world leaders and bringing the voice of science to decision-makers. He said: “We will seize this opportunity to highlight ideas and messages directed specifically to government leaders.”
Knowledge is the engine of progress.
Wang Hu, Executive Director and Secretary-General of the International Association of Senior Scientists, stressed that the success of holding the World Summit of Senior Scientists is an embodiment of the UAE’s appreciation for science and its status, and the belief of its people in the importance of knowledge as an engine for progress. He appreciated the participation of the members of the International Association of Senior Scientists in this summit, as their efforts in shaping our understanding of the world, while continuing their role in supporting the progress of humanity in various tangible and sustainable ways.
He said that the close cooperation between the World Summit of Governments and the World Summit of Scientists contributed to establishing a unique dialogue that brought together the leaders of science and politics, which constitutes an important moment in the process of development of global conferences.
He added that the world stands today on the verge of a decisive stage that requires working together for the future of humanity and the advancement of modern science. This is what the UAE, which is hosting the summit, is doing, as the features of the scientific scene are being drawn here. Knowledge here leads policy development, and discovery embodies global progress.
