Jordan leads the medal tally at the opening of the Women’s Arab Athletics Championships

The first day of athletics competitions in the eighth edition of the 2026 Arab Club Games for Women, currently being held in the Emirate of Sharjah, witnessed strong competitions and remarkable technical levels with the launch of the “Mother of Games”.
The first day’s competitions were held yesterday, Sunday, amid an official and technical presence from the game’s leaders, locally, Arably, and Gulf, at Al-Thiqa Club for the Disabled. They included races: 5,000 meters walking, 400 meters running, 3,000 meters steeplechase, 100 meters running, and triple jump. The final of the hammer toss competition was held at the Sharjah Olympic Center for Women’s Sports, and the rest of the athletics competitions will continue today and tomorrow.
Jordan topped the medal table at the end of the first day after winning two gold medals in the 400-meter race and the 5000-meter walk, followed by the UAE and Iraq, each of whom won four colored medals. The UAE’s tally came with a gold medal in the hammer throw and two silver medals in the 400-meter and 3000-meter steeplechase races, in addition to a bronze in the 100-meter race, while Iraq won a gold medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase race. And a silver in the 5000-meter walk, in addition to two bronzes in the triple jump and the 400-meter race.
Kuwait won three medals: a gold in the triple jump, a silver and a bronze in the hammer throw. Egypt also finished the first day with two medals, including a gold in the 100-meter race and a silver in the triple jump. Saudi Arabia won a bronze in the 3000-meter steeplechase and a silver in the 100-meter race.
The 100-meter sprint race was full of excitement, as Egyptian Shatha Hossam Ahmed from the Gifted Club and Olympic champion won the gold medal with a time of 12.21 seconds, followed by Loujain Ibrahim Al-Hamid with the silver medal with a time of 12.34 seconds, while Emirati Fatima Ali Al Balushi from the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club came in third place with a time of 12.62 seconds.
In the 400-meter running race, runner Walaa Muhammad Al-Qawasmi from the Jordanian Al-Qadisiyah Club won the gold medal with a time of 58.13 seconds, followed by Mahra Abdul Rahim Naqilya from the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club with a silver medal with a time of 59.30 seconds, while Iraqi Baraa Mamdouh Mahmoud from the Al-Fatta Sports Club “Nineveh” came third with a time of 59.75 seconds.
As for the 3000 meter steeplechase race, it witnessed Iraqi supremacy through Narges Hussein Abboud from Al-Fatah Sports Club of Nineveh, who won the gold with a time of 11:55.68 minutes, followed by Emirati Alia Khaled Al Muhairi from the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club with the silver medal with a time of 12:29.55 minutes, while the bronze went to Saudi Arabia’s Zainab Saleh Al Omair with a time of 15:43.89 minutes.
In the hammer throw competition, Emirati Salma Haitham Al Marri from Abu Dhabi Athletics Club won the gold medal with a throw of 49.45 metres, while Kuwaitis Fajr Khaled Allam and Dalal Al Mazmi from Salwa Al Sabah Club won the silver and bronze medals with distances of 43.19 meters and 34.29 metres, respectively.
The 5,000-meter walking race witnessed Jordanian supremacy, as Joan Abdul Hamid Al-Quraini from Al-Qadisiyah Club won the gold medal with a time of 30:43.86 minutes, while Iraqi Athra Faisal Jassim from Al-Fatah Sports Club in Nineveh won the silver medal with a time of 33:15.10 minutes.
In the triple jump competitions, Kuwaiti Aisha Walid Lakhdar won the gold medal with a jump of 11.55 metres, ahead of Egyptian Maryam Mahmoud Mustafa, who won silver with a jump of 10.96 metres, while the bronze went to Iraqi Jawan Bahaa El-Din Hassan from Al-Fatah Sports Club, Nineveh, with a jump of 10.84 metres.
The results of the first day confirmed the high technical level of the competitions and the widening of the scope of competition between Arab clubs, a clear indication that the athletics competitions in “Arab Women’s” are heading towards a conclusion full of excitement and challenge.
