Muhammad Al-Sharqi witnesses a lecture "The artificial intelligence race: from optical chip to economic power"

FUJAIRAH, April 13, 2017 (WAM) – His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, stressed the importance of investing in advanced technology and scientific innovation, supporting national competencies capable of contributing to building a competitive, knowledge-based digital economy, and enhancing the UAE’s position in the global artificial intelligence race.

This came during His Highness’ attendance, at the Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi Majlis, in a session entitled “The Race for Artificial Intelligence: From the Optical Chip to Economic Power,” presented by Professor Hoda Al-Khuzaimi, a strategic advisor in economics and investment, associate deputy dean for translation of research and innovation, and assistant professor of engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi, and Dr. Kanish Al Qubaisi, an Emirati researcher specializing in advanced technology.

His Highness noted the follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, for scientific and knowledge initiatives that contribute to anticipating the future, and His Highness’s continuous support for projects that enhance the emirate’s presence in the advanced knowledge and technological sectors.

The session addressed a number of topics, the most important of which was the rapid development in advanced chip technologies related to artificial intelligence and optical computing, and their role in reshaping the future of computing and data centers, in addition to the strategic and economic dimensions of this development, and how chip technologies have transformed from research laboratories into tools of industrial and economic power influencing the balance of global competition.

During the session, Professor Hoda Al-Khuzaimi pointed out that the artificial intelligence race has become closely linked to the ability of countries to develop their technical and investment systems, stressing that building digital sovereignty requires integrated strategies that combine scientific innovation, developing competencies, and strengthening the technical infrastructure.

Dr. Kenish Al Qubaisi reviewed his innovative scientific project to develop a photoelectric chip based on laser light to accelerate calculations related to artificial intelligence and machine learning, while achieving high energy efficiency, explaining that this technology represents a qualitative leap in the future of smart computing and data centers.

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Naieh Al Tunaiji, Director of the Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi Council, stressed the Council’s keenness, under the directives of His Highness the Crown Prince of Fujairah, to host an elite group of experts and specialists in the scientific and technical fields, which contributes to enhancing knowledge dialogue on future issues, and supports spreading awareness of the importance of technology and its role in sustainable development.

The session was attended by His Excellency Sulaiman Al-Jassim, President of Fujairah University, Emirati astronaut Hazza Al-Mansouri, a number of officials, specialists and those interested in the technology and innovation sector, and a group of young people.
