Specialists have warned of the increasing spread of the “Prosopis farcta” plant in a number of regions of the Kingdom, due to the threat it poses to vegetation and Environmental diversity, in light of its high ability to adapt and spread in dry environments.
The Weqaa Center explained that the yarrow plant is a perennial spiny plant, with woody, branched stems, and has deep, strong roots that extend over wide distances, which gives it a great ability to absorb resources and compete with other plants. It also produces yellow cylindrical pods containing hard seeds that contribute to the speed of its reproduction and spread.
The speed of the plant’s spread
The center stated that the spread of the plant occurs through several means, the most prominent of which is the transfer of seeds by animals that feed on them, in addition to wind and Rainwater and Floods, as well as its transmission through contaminated soil or agricultural equipment, which helps it reach new areas.
With regard to control methods, he indicated the possibility of using mechanical means such as manual eradication or using equipment, with an emphasis on completely removing the roots from under the surface of the soil to ensure that they do not re-grow. Chemical control can also be used through appropriate herbicides, such as “Glyphosate”, according to approved instructions.

The Center stressed the importance of timing the use of the herbicide, as it is preferable to apply it during the various stages of plant growth to achieve the best results in limiting its spread.
It also pointed out the need to take caution and caution when dealing with the plant, given that it is a thorny plant that may cause wounds, calling for the use of appropriate means of prevention during operations. Control.
He pointed out that the spread of the sprout plant was monitored in several regions, including Riyadh, Medina, Qassim, Hail and Asir, stressing the importance of joining efforts to limit its spread and maintain the environmental balance.
