Launch of “RefCam” technology in the Spanish King’s Cup final

Next Saturday’s Copa del Rey final, between Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, will mark the Spanish debut of RefCam, an innovative technology promoted by the Spanish Football League (LaLiga). Its entry into this competition follows an agreement reached between the two parties. This camera provides an unprecedented view of the game from the referee’s perspective, allowing fans to experience the excitement of football with an unprecedented level of immersion at the highest professional level.

Javier Alberola, the referee appointed to officiate the final at La Cartuja, will wear a camera combined with a microphone in his headset, providing the television broadcast with a closer, more immersive and completely original perspective of the match.

This launch not only presents a pioneering technology in Spain, but also represents the beginning of its application in LaLiga, where it will be used in one match in each round of the league starting from the 22nd of this month, which reinforces the competition’s commitment to improving the audio-visual experience of football. After its debut in La Cartuja, RefCam will gradually be integrated into key matches on the calendar:

Round 33: Barcelona vs. Celta Vigo (April 22)

Round 32: Real Betis vs. Real Madrid (April 24)

Round 34: Valencia vs. Atletico Madrid

Round 35: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid

A new way to follow football
RefCam consists of a camera built into the referee’s headset, which transmits a live view from the referee’s perspective during the match. This angle puts the viewer at the heart of the action, allowing him to experience the speed of play, the pressure, and the closeness of each shot from a completely new angle.

In addition, the system includes sound, which contributes to a better understanding of refereeing decisions and provides a new level of transparency and closeness with fans, strengthening the connection between the game and its audience.
