Dubai Police discusses risks "Deep fakes"

Dubai, April 22, WAM / The Dubai Police General Command, represented by the Future Foresight Centre, discussed the challenges of “Deep Fake” technologies and their implications for digital security, as part of the Virtual Future Dialogue, which focused on anticipating emerging risks and enhancing readiness to deal with them.

The organization of the dialogue came within the framework of Dubai Police’s efforts to keep pace with scientific and technical developments in the fields of artificial intelligence, and to employ them in police sciences, especially in the fields of forensic evidence and digital investigations, in a way that enhances proactiveness in confronting emerging patterns of crimes.

Brigadier General Dr. Expert Hamdan Al-Ghasiyeh, Director of the Future Foresight Centre, confirmed that the dialogue comes within the framework of Dubai Police’s keenness to keep pace with scientific developments in various fields, and to use them in police sciences, through qualified and trained national cadres according to the highest levels, in order to achieve the aspirations of Dubai Police and its plan to be proactive and anticipating the future in various scientific specializations, especially modern ones.

He said that, in light of the rapid technical development and the qualitative leaps the world is witnessing in artificial intelligence technologies, deepfake technologies have emerged as one of the most prominent modern digital challenges, due to their superior ability to produce audio-visual content that is difficult to distinguish from reality. This development has contributed to the expansion of the use of these technologies, to include new types of digital crimes and media disinformation. Therefore, it was necessary to take a proactive approach in discussing this challenge through the Virtual Future Dialogue to highlight the growing dangers of deepfake technologies, by reviewing The latest statistics and indicators at the local and global levels, and what they reveal about the increasing volume of digital crimes linked to these technologies.

He added that the virtual dialogue addressed new types of crimes and their implementation mechanisms, including methods of impersonation and manipulation of audio-visual content, and their impact on individuals and institutions. It also reviewed the latest technical means used in detecting fake content, while assessing the extent of their accuracy and effectiveness in light of the rapid development of artificial intelligence tools, in addition to reviewing the best global practices in monitoring and analyzing these materials and confronting the threats of digital misinformation, noting that the workshop focused on enhancing awareness among participants of mechanisms for verifying the authenticity of images and video clips. Brigadier General Al-Ghasiyeh explained that this dialogue contributed to developing a set of future ideas and solutions to enhance the readiness of Dubai Police.
