After 3 second-tier seasons, Schalke returns to the spotlight of the German League

After three seasons in the second division, Schalke’s 1-0 win over its guest Fortuna Dusseldorf returned the German football giant to the top flight, the “Bundesliga.”
For those inside the club, the path to progress revolves around correcting a series of mistakes and returning Schalke to the path of stability again.
Schalke, which won the German League title seven times, is among the most popular clubs in Europe and is only surpassed in Germany in terms of the number of affiliated members by Bayern Munich and its arch-rival Borussia Dortmund, with more than 200,000 members.
In 2021, Schalke were relegated for the first time in three decades. At the time, it was burdened with debt, so the decline in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic was more severe from a financial standpoint, and after a quick return to the top flight, Schalke fell again, but this time the return among the adults was not quick.
Executive Director Matthias Thielemann, who joined the club in 2024, said that Schalke’s presence in the second division was a “mistake,” adding: “We are not a second-class club when it comes to fans or infrastructure.” “Obviously we are there now, and there are reasons for that.”
