Majid Al Nuaimi lays the foundation stone for the first private veterinary teaching hospital and college of veterinary medicine in Ajman

Ajman, May 20 / WAM / His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Majid bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chief of the Court of His Highness the Ruler of Ajman, laid the foundation stone for the first private veterinary teaching hospital and Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine, at Thumbay Medical City in Ajman.

The project is considered the first of its kind in the UAE, and constitutes a qualitative addition to the system of animal health care and veterinary medical education in the country, by providing advanced therapeutic services for small and large animals, and preparing specialized cadres in veterinary medicine within the country, in a way that meets the needs of this vital sector and supports its development.

The project includes Thumbay Veterinary Hospital and Thumbay Veterinary College, with the aim of providing comprehensive health care for pets, such as dogs, cats and exotic animals, in addition to large animals, including horses and camels, under one roof.

In its next phase, the project includes the establishment of an educational farm that will provide students of Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine with direct, practical training in productive animal medicine, herd health, and farm management.

Dr. Thumbay Mohiuddin, the founding president of the Thumbay Group, said that when the Thumbay Group was established nearly three decades ago, its goal was to provide world-class health care and education within the UAE, so that families would not have to search for it abroad, indicating that the scope of this covenant had been expanded to include animals.

He explained that Thumbay Veterinary Hospital will provide medical care for animals, according to the same standards that our human hospitals provide and are famous for. The college will also provide its students with a local educational path that qualifies them for a profession that the region is in great need of. This will be followed by the opening of the educational farm, thus completing a real educational environment that extends from the clinic to the field.

For his part, Professor Manda Venkataramana, Director of Gulf Medical University, spoke about the academic aspirations of the new college, explaining that the strength of veterinary education lies in learning on realistic disease cases, and by combining the hospital, college and farm in one place, the student will receive an educational environment that is comparable to the finest international institutions.

He added that the college’s curricula guarantee the learner direct contact from the first year, with a focus on evidence-based practices and scientific research that are in line with the reality of this region. Including dealing with desert species, working animals, food-producing livestock, as well as pets that are especially loved by families in the UAE.

Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine opens its doors with the launch of its flagship “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)” programme, a comprehensive academic program that focuses on intensive clinical training, evidence-based medical practices, and scientific research relevant to the regional environment.

This curriculum qualifies graduates to work in various fields of veterinary medicine. Ranging from pet clinics, equine and large animal medicine, and food livestock, through to the areas of wildlife and public animal health.

The college intends to launch more short-term academic programs and other specialized study and academic programs in the future. Details of admission and the programs offered can be accessed by visiting the link: “gmu.ac.ae.”
