Rubio continues US criticism of NATO over the war in Iran

Renew US Secretary of State Marco Rubio His criticism of NATO (NATO) on the grounds that it did not provide any support for the war on Iran, as he headed to Sweden today, Thursday, to participate in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

Rubio told reporters: Many countries in NATO agree with us that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon, and that Iran poses a threat to the world.

He added that President Donald Trump said he would take a step about that, and stressed that he was not asking them to deploy their fighters, but they refused to do anything.

He continued: We were upset. Very much so.

Justification for America joining NATO

Rubio said: Throughout my political career, I have been a strong supporter of NATO, and I know why NATO is good for Europe, but why is it good for America? Because it gives us bases in the region that allow us to demonstrate our strength during any emergency in the Middle East or elsewhere.

He continued: Therefore, when this is the main justification for your presence in NATO, and then there are countries like Spain that refuse to allow us to use these bases, then, why are you in NATO in the first place?

He saw this question as "Very fair"

Positions critical of the war

Trump did not consult in advance with NATO member states regarding the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.

Many allies doubted the necessity of going to war, in light of the great controversy over American and Israeli warnings about an Iranian nuclear threat.
Tehran’s response to the war resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for supplies of oil and liquefied natural gas, About severe disturbances in global energy markets.

Positions critical of the war were issued by major countries in the alliance. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described it as illegal, and refused to allow American aircraft to use his country’s bases, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz saw that Tehran had insulted Washington during the talks between the two parties.

These positions angered the US administration, which announced that it would withdraw 5,000 American soldiers from Germany.
