A second division team wins the Portuguese Cup… “the first title in its history”

Second division club Torense achieved a resounding surprise on Sunday by defeating Sporting Lisbon 2-1 after extra time in the final match of the Portuguese Cup football competition, winning the first title in its 70-year history.

The club from Torres Vedras, a city west of Lisbon, had only reached the cup final once before, when it lost to Porto in 1956.
With this achievement, Torrensi will participate in the European League “Europa League” competition next season.
His historic season may become even more distinguished, as the second leg of the promotion play-off awaits him, after the first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, against Casa Pia on Thursday.
Torrensi opened the scoring after three minutes through Malian Kevan Zohi, before Colombian Luis Soares equalized the score for Sporting in the 53rd minute, noting that the capital team finished the season in second place in the league, having won the title in the previous two consecutive seasons.
Regular time ended with a 1-1 draw, and the two teams resorted to two additional periods during which Sporting suffered a painful blow by expelling its Uruguayan striker Maximiliano Araujo in the 109th minute for causing a penalty kick that Cape Verdean player Yannik Stopera successfully took, scoring the winning goal (113), giving Torrensi its first historic title.
Stopera, named in honor of former French international Yannick Stopera, will participate in the World Cup with the Cape Verde national team in the coming weeks.
