Shocks and exclusions… surprises from Argentina’s roster in the 2026 World Cup

The announcement of the final list of the Argentine national team participating in the 2026 World Cup sparked a wide wave of controversy after it witnessed the absence of a number of prominent names who shined during the last season.
Technical director Lionel Scaloni relied on a combination of elements of experience and tactical harmony, preferring to maintain the structure that led “Tango” to recent successes, even if this came at the expense of excluding players with great artistic value.
Among the most notable absentees was veteran full-back Marcos Acuña, a River Plate player, along with Bournemouth defender Marcus Senesi, in a decision that raised many questions about the backline choices.
In the midfield, notable names such as Emiliano Buendia, Aston Villa player, and Maximo Perrone, Como player, were absent, in addition to the young talent Franco Mastantono, Real Madrid player.
As for the attack, the list was devoid of Roma winger Matias Sule, as well as promising striker Gianluca Pristiani, the Benfica player, despite his distinguished performances recently.
Despite these absences, Argentina enters the tournament with almost full strength, led by the legend Lionel Messi, and supported by prominent names such as Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez.
The defending champion hopes to continue its global dominance and confirm its superiority, although the exclusion of these names will remain under scrutiny throughout the team’s journey in the World Cup, especially if the team faces any stumble during the decisive rounds.
Lionel Messi’s teammates are in the tenth group in the first round of the World Cup, along with the teams of Algeria, Jordan and Austria.
