How does Iraq stop Norway Haaland? Technical advice from former player Karim Allawi

Former Iraqi national team player Karim Muhammad Allawi stressed the importance of the “Lions of Mesopotamia” playing their upcoming match against Norway (at 2:00 am on Wednesday) in a manner characterized by discipline and balance, pointing out that presenting a good technical performance against one of the strongest European teams is a gain in itself, in light of the technical differences and great potential possessed by the Norwegian team.

The Iraqi team is competing in a group that includes France, the runner-up of the world champion in the last edition, and Senegal, the runner-up of the African champion, along with Norway, a group described as “iron” due to the strength of its teams.

Allawi told “Emirates Today”: “The match is very difficult, as we are playing in one of the strongest groups in the tournament… France is the runner-up of the world champion, and Senegal is the runner-up of the African champion, in addition to a developed Norwegian team that includes distinguished players active in the most prominent European leagues, so the chances of achieving a positive result seem very difficult.”

He added: “We hope that the Iraqi team will present a good technical level that reflects a positive image of Iraqi football in front of the world, regardless of the final result. Appearing in an organized and competitive manner against one of the strongest European teams will give Iraqi football a great morale boost and enhance its presence in the World Cup.”

Regarding the tactical approach expected to help achieve victory over Norway, led by its giant player, Erling Haaland, Allawi said: “I do not think that the team will play in a purely defensive style, because Australian coach Graham Arnold often relies on two attackers, which makes it unlikely that he will resort to a retreating defense throughout the periods of the match.”

He continued: “I advise the Iraqi team to balance defense and attack. From my point of view, it would be better for it to lean more towards the defensive side with a ratio of approximately 60% defense versus 40% attack, with the need to put pressure on the Norwegian players and close lines to reduce their danger.”

He pointed out that he does not expect changes in the front line, explaining: “I think the coach will continue to rely on the duo Ali Al Hammadi and Ayman Hussein, because of their ability to perform defensive roles in addition to offensive duties.”
