Uruguay bids farewell to the World Cup… Spain expels the two-time world champion
The Spanish national team ousted its Uruguayan counterpart from the 2026 World Cup after defeating it with an unanswered goal, in the match that brought them together in the third and final round of the eighth group competitions, so that the “Matador” team took the lead in the group with 7 points, while the Uruguay national team, the two-time world champion, left the tournament early after its score froze at two points.
Alex Baena scored the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute after taking advantage of a perfect cross pass from Marcos Llorente, giving the Spanish team an advantage that they maintained until the final whistle, despite repeated attempts by the Uruguayan team to equalize.
The Spanish team imposed its control over long periods of the match, and continued to threaten its opponent’s goal after the goal, and almost increased its lead on more than one occasion, while Uruguay’s attempts collided with the brilliance of goalkeeper Unai Simon and the solidity of the Spanish defence, before the Latin team concluded the match with ten players after Augustin Canobbio was sent off in stoppage time.
With this result, the Spanish national team continued its journey in the tournament, topping the eighth group with 7 points, qualifying for the round of 32, while the journey of the Uruguay national team, the winner of the World Cup title on two occasions, ended with an early exit after being unable to achieve any victory in the group stage and was satisfied with collecting only two points.
