Switzerland defeats Colombia on penalties…and qualifies to face Argentina in the quarter-finals

The Swiss national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup by defeating its Colombian counterpart 4-3 on penalty kicks after a goalless draw in regular and extra time of the round of 16 match.

The Swiss national team completed the group of qualifiers to the quarter-finals by qualifying in the last matches of the round of 16, setting up a date with the defending champion, the Argentine national team, which had won on Tuesday evening over Egypt 3-2 on penalties.

The quarter-final match will be held on July 11 in Kansas City, noting that the winner of the Switzerland-Argentina match will meet the winner of the England-Norway match, on the 15th of the same month in Atlanta.

The Swiss national team matched its best achievements by qualifying for the quarter-finals, which it achieved in the 1934, 1938 and 1954 editions.

Over the course of the last three World Cup editions, the Swiss national team was content with reaching the round of 16, before finally overcoming that obstacle in the 2026 edition.
