“Abu Janti, King of the Taxi.” Samer Al-Masry revives the series in Ramadan 2027 drama

17 years after the first part was shown, the Syrian star, Samer Al-Masry, is bringing back the character “Abu Janti” to the drama, through a dramatic work, titled “Abu Janti, King of the Taxi,” and it is scheduled to be shown during the 2027 Ramadan drama season.

Samer Al-Masry had presented the series, for the first time, in 2010, during the Ramadan drama season, before presenting the second part of it in the 2012 Ramadan drama season. This represents the reintroduction of one of the most prominent comedic characters in Syrian drama to the screen, during the 2027 Ramadan drama season.

Samer Al-Masry will bring together the stars of the first and second parts, with him in the new part, led by: Ayman Reda, Andre Skaff, Fadi Sobeih, Shukran Murtaja, Samia Al-Jazairia, and Taj Haidar. The work is written by Saeed Al-Jawish, and directed by Zuhair Qanou.

The series “Abu Janti” achieved great Arab fame, and is considered one of the most prominent Syrian comedies and the most widespread among the public. Samer Al-Masry presents the character of the taxi driver, “Abu Janti,” who roams the streets of the Syrian capital, Damascus, so that each trip turns into a new story, reflecting society’s concerns and daily issues, in a form that combines comedy and social drama.

An artistic vision…and a longing for clean comedy:

The Syrian star had previously stated his desire for Syrian drama to return to its former glory and spread, expressing the audience’s longing for clean Syrian comedy, which respects family values ​​and provides entertainment without vulgarity or abuse. He also touched on the reality of comedy drama, and the viewer’s need for light works suitable for all age groups. He stressed that the audience does not only miss the “Levantine environment” as some believe, but also misses the old Syrian comedies, which were based on pure laughter and provided simple entertainment that was close to reality.

From “Novelty”… to the renewal of historical “Fantasia”:

The last dramatic appearance of the star Samer Al-Masry was in the Ramadan 2026 drama season, through the series “Al-Nawailati”, where he presented the character “The Diver”. Al-Masry excels in presenting the works of the “Levantine environment” and reformulating their topics in a way that is closer to the people, while preserving his image, features, and tools.

The series “Al-Nawailati” belongs to “historical fantasy,” but it is based on realistic details from the “loom” profession in the Levant, including: raising silkworms and extracting silk. The work focuses on the status of the “Kar sheikhs” and their role in protecting the Damascene identity and preserving the city’s crafts over time, as they are a social shield in the face of external intrusions. The series is produced by “Golden Line” Company, and written by Othman Jahi, and combines traditional symbolism and dramatic imagination, as part of an attempt to renew the artistic form of Syrian drama, as “Al-Nawailati” aspires to open a different narrative horizon, balancing originality and experimentation.
