The United Nations welcomes the election of a new president for Lebanon

Today, Thursday, the United Nations welcomed the election of General Joseph Aoun as President of the Lebanese Republic.
In a statement issued today, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, described Aoun’s election as the long-awaited first step to overcome the political and institutional vacuum in Lebanon, providing the Lebanese people with effective governmental institutions that meet their aspirations.
She stressed the need to expedite the appointment of a prime minister and form a government without any delay, pointing in this regard to the enormity of the tasks entrusted to the Lebanese state, which cannot tolerate further wasting of time.
She said that the election of a new president brings hope again, and represents an opportunity to pave the way towards achieving progress in consolidating the cessation of hostilities and ensuring the security and stability of the country, including strengthening the state’s authority over the entire Lebanese territory and advancing comprehensive and sustainable reforms.
She concluded her statement by emphasizing the United Nations’ aspiration to work with the new Lebanese president and the relevant authorities to support Lebanon in the concrete and feasible steps it takes to achieve those goals.
