Human Rights Commissioner expresses trauma about reports of the killing of hundreds of civilians in North Darfur

Turk said in a statement issued today, Wednesday: “My office learned that 13 of the dead belong to one family, and that reports reported the death of some of the injured due to the extreme limitations for obtaining health care. We also received reports that in the aftermath of the attack, members of the Rapid Support Forces arrested and arrested civilians arbitrarily in Tora.”.
He warned that despite his repeated warnings and appeals to both the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces to protect civilians in line with international humanitarian law, “Civilians are still being killed randomly, injury and abusive treatment, almost daily, while civilian notables are still a frequent target.”.
Turk urged the two parties, renewing all the necessary measures, as the law requires, to avoid hurting civilians and avoiding attacking civilian notables, noting that random attacks and attacks on civilians and civilian notables are rejected and war crimes may be formed.
He stressed the need for a complete accountability for the violations committed in this last attack, and in many other attacks that preceded it against civilians, adding: “This behavior should never become natural.”.
