Hunger in West and Central Africa – standard needs and financing shortages

According to the latest food security analysis issued by the “coordinated frame”, more than 36 million people are currently struggling in the region to meet their basic food and nutritional needs.
This number is expected to rise to more than 52 million during the dry season – between June and August, including nearly three million people in emergency conditions (the fourth degree of integrated classification of food security stages), and 2,600 people in Mali exposed to the danger of catastrophic hunger (fifth degree).
The coordinated framework is a monotheistic tool that helps to prepare accurate analyzes about the current and expected food and nutrition conditions in the Sahel and West Africa region, and combines many international and regional actors.
“Millions of lives at stake.
The World Food Program said it aims to reach 12 million people in the region with basic aid and food support this year, and it has already reached three million people. While the humanitarian needs reached its historical climax, the program stated that the resources needed to launch an effective response on a large scale do not keep pace with this situation.
” “We are at a turning point, and millions of lives are at stake. Without immediate financing, the program will have to reduce its aid more, whether in terms of the number of people who reach aid or the size of the distributed food shares. The consequences are severe.
The program warned that five million people are at risk of fully lost help unless it received urgent financing. He stressed that he needed 710 million dollars urgently to continue providing aid to the most vulnerable groups in the region during the next six months.
Banning of crises at a small cost
In addition to emergency food aid, the World Food Program urged governments and partners to invest in sustainable solutions aimed at building the ability to withstand and reduce long -term dependence on aid, such as its integrated program of steadfastness – which rehabilitated 300,000 hectares of land to support more than four million people in the Sahel region since 2018.
In this regard, Mrs. Van der Wilden urged the international community to collectively enhance investments in rebuilding environmental systems and enhancing local economies for the prosperity of societies, and stressed that “This is low -cost and prevents crises.”
س In order: “By leading road and investing in early procedures, restoring environmental systems, we can protect weak societies, save lives, reduce future humanitarian needs, and maintain steadfast gains throughout the Sahel region.”
