Housing and the United Nations discuss updating the national housing file in Egypt

Officials of the Ministry of Housing held a coordination meeting between the Housing and Utilities Sector in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, “Habitat”, to begin work on updating the national housing file in Egypt, in implementation of the directives of Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, and in confirmation of the pioneering role of the Housing and Utilities Sector in supporting the preparation of existing housing policies, strategies and studies. The meeting came as confirmation of the close partnership between the United Nations Human Settlements Program and the Arab Republic of Egypt in supporting national policies for housing and urban development, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the eleventh goal, which is to make cities and human settlements comprehensive, safe and resilient. During the meeting, the roadmap for the modernization process was discussed, which aims to strengthen the national framework for evidence-based housing policies, in line with the demographic, economic and urban transformations taking place in the country.
The national housing file is a key reference document. To evaluate the conditions of the housing sector in terms of supply and demand, access to housing, and governance systems, and updating the file comes as an essential step to ensure that national policies are based on accurate data that reflects the current reality and supports the achievement of comprehensive and sustainable urban growth.
The Ministry and the United Nations Human Settlements Program confirmed that housing is at the heart of sustainable development priorities in Egypt, It forms a major focus of the New Urban Agenda and the new strategic plan of UN-Habitat, and is considered a fundamental pillar for achieving social housing, economic resilience and environmental sustainability.
During the meeting, representatives of UN-Habitat made a presentation on the main recommendations issued by the second session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on With adequate housing for all, he reviewed relevant international trends and policies, highlighting the lessons learned that can be utilized in the Egyptian context.
