Artificial intelligence enhances governments’ preparedness to confront climate change

Dubai, November 25 / WAM / The World Government Summit Foundation, in cooperation with Accenture, issued a new report entitled “The Advantages of Adapting to Climate Change: How Can Artificial Intelligence Help Governments Drive Climate Action Toward Better Results?”, which highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in enabling governments to confront climate challenges and transform them into sustainable development and economic opportunities.
The report highlights more than 20 global case studies, draws data from more than 50 countries that have national strategies for artificial intelligence, and adopts seven main themes for the effective contributions of artificial intelligence to enhancing government-led efforts in climate action, which are: Policy formulation and implementation, climate change forecasting models, sustainable agriculture, urban planning, energy management, community engagement, supply chain and government procurement.
The report confirms that governments around the world face a dual mission, which is to protect societies from the escalating challenges of climate change, while at the same time promoting the adoption of transformative technologies that contribute to improving the quality of life of individuals and communities, most notably artificial intelligence, which is a strategic tool to enhance the readiness of the government sector.
He points out that since the ratification of the Paris Agreement in 2015, the commitments of both developed and developing countries have increased by nearly 18-fold, although they are still insufficient given the rise in temperatures, as 2024 was the hottest year on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization, and the first year in which the global average surface temperature exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Mohammed Al-Sharhan, Director of the World Government Summit Foundation, said that the “Advantages of Adaptation to Climate Change” report comes at a stage witnessing rapid transformations in the development of artificial intelligence technologies and environmental challenges, which requires creating balanced opportunities, solutions and policies that support the readiness of governments’ work and enhance their ability to achieve the highest levels of adaptation and balance with global transformations and achieve the best results.
For his part, Ramez Shehadeh, Head of Global Public Sector Strategy and Head of Strategy and Consulting for the Middle East and Africa at Accenture, said that artificial intelligence has the potential to be one of the most powerful tools in combating climate change, if governments lead with a bold vision and decisive action.
He added that the report provides a roadmap for governments to harness artificial intelligence not only to protect the planet, but also to drive comprehensive economic growth, improve services, and build more resilient societies, noting that reducing emissions and planning for adaptation are critical priorities for the world, and that the future of climate leadership lies in digitalization.
The report explains that the convergence of climate action goals with the rapid progress of artificial intelligence opens broad horizons for governments to accelerate climate adaptation plans and improve the efficiency of responding to environmental developments. It also highlights the importance of artificial intelligence in accelerating mitigation and adaptation efforts through analyzing big data, simulating future scenarios, and improving resource allocation with greater effectiveness.
The report presents a set of global experiences that demonstrated the ability of artificial intelligence solutions to achieve tangible results in the areas of emissions control, early warning of natural disasters, enhancing agricultural production, and supporting sustainable energy management models.
The report calls on governments to develop environmentally friendly data centers to ensure that the expansion of the use of artificial intelligence does not lead to an increase in environmental burdens, with the need to enhance responsible governance of these technologies based on transparency, justice, and protection of privacy.
The report concludes by emphasizing that artificial intelligence represents a pivotal tool to support climate action, but it is not a single solution, but rather part of a broader system that requires effective government policies, advanced infrastructure, and broad international partnerships to achieve sustainable results.
