Dozens died as a result of catastrophic floods in Thailand and Indonesia

Catastrophic floods affected millions of people in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

At least 33 people died as a result of massive floods in southern Thailand, according to what the Bangkok Post newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing a government spokesman.

The newspaper added that more than 5.2 million people were affected in Thailand alone after the monsoon rains.

According to university professor and climate change expert Siri Supratid, it may take weeks for flood waters to recede from the most affected province of Hat Yai, which is located on the border with Malaysia.

In many places, emergency teams can only move by boat. The government ordered the deployment of helicopters to drop food and relief supplies to families stuck in their homes in areas largely flooded with water. Supplies are already running out in many places.

About eight thousand tourists, most of them foreigners from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, were stranded in hotels and Hat Yai Airport in recent days.

Across the border in Malaysia, about ten thousand people took refuge in temporary accommodation in Kelantan state.

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, thousands were displaced after days of heavy rain that resulted in floods and landslides.

At least eight people were killed and dozens were injured, according to the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency on Wednesday.
