Friday… 42 international experts at the Ninth International Conference on Thoracic and Lung Tumors

Cairo is hosting, under the auspices and presence of the Ministries of Health, Population and Higher Education, the activities of the Ninth International Conference on Lung and Thoracic Cancer, organized by the International Association for the Control and Treatment of Oncology in cooperation with Ohio University in the United States of America and the National Cancer Institute.

 The conference will be held from December 5 to 6, 2025 at the Hilton Grand Nile Hotel, and the opening will begin at five in the evening next Friday.

42 scientists and experts from all over the world will participate in the conference. Various countries of the world, along with an elite group of specialists and health leaders from Egypt, the Arab countries, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, Canada and the United States, within the largest scientific gathering specialized in chest and lung diseases in the region.

The conference aims to transfer the latest scientific developments derived from the most important international forums, to the reality of clinical practice, in a way that supports health systems in low- and middle-income countries, and raises the efficiency of dealing with the nature of the disease, its diagnosis and treatment.

The conference discusses, over two days, the latest developments in genomic medicine. Molecular diagnostics, liquid biopsy techniques, smart targeted and immunotherapies, treatment in the early stages, pre-surgery and post-surgery, in addition to early detection programmes, health policies, ensuring equity in the availability of innovative medicines, and building networks of clinical trials and personalized medicine.

Dr. Ola Khorshid, President of the International Society of Thoracic and Lung Tumors and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, confirmed: Cairo University said that the opening of the conference witnessed a prominent presence of a number of global oncology pioneers, including Christian Rolfe, President of the International Society for Liquid Biopsy.

 In addition to a group of senior professors and experts in Egypt, including: Dr. Awad Taj El-Din, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Health Affairs, Dr. Ashraf Hatem, Chairman of the Health Committee in the House of Representatives, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Moati Samra, Dean of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Nadia Zakhary, former Minister of Scientific Research, Dr. Mohamed Latif, head of the Egyptian Health Council.

Dr. explained. Khorshid said that this year’s conference represents a practical call to confront the increasing burden of lung cancer, especially in low- and middle-income countries, through:

– Supporting and expanding diagnostic capabilities and molecular testing.

– Achieving equity in making innovative treatments available to all patients.

– Establishing regional frameworks for early detection and regular screening.

– Promoting scientific research and building networks for clinical trials.

– Developing unified treatment guidelines that take into account the disparity of resources between people. countries.

The conference includes 30 scientific sessions and a number of advanced workshops on radiotherapy, medical imaging supported by artificial intelligence, and pain management, reflecting the global trend towards integrating technology and precision medicine into the health care system.

The conference will also host a high-level international consensus session on the treatment of operable lung cancer in countries with limited resources, with the aim of producing a regional statement and call for action, in addition to discussions on the National Tumor Registry in Egypt and building the infrastructure for clinical research.

The conference will be honoured. During the awards ceremony, the conference included a number of scientific icons who contributed to the development of oncology globally and regionally, in addition to honoring the name of the late Dr. Rabab Jaafar through the Young Researchers Award in support of rising generations and in continuation of her mission of education and scientific empowerment.

For her part, Dr. Lubna Sedqi, Professor of Oncology at Kasr Al-Aini Faculty of Medicine and Secretary General of the International Society of Thoracic and Lung Oncology, stated that the conference hosts an elite group of the most prominent scientists and experts from the United States, Italy and Spain. And Greece, in addition to officials concerned with decision-making in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, and representatives of the African Oncology Organization.

She stressed that the conference program serves the health system in the field of lung cancer, and includes honoring two of the world’s lung tumor pioneers, in addition to honoring a group of Egyptian scientists at the National Cancer Institute in the specializations of pathology, radiation therapy, and oncology treatment, in addition to awarding the Excellence in Leadership and Guidance Award to the Egyptian scientist Dr. Hamdi Abdel Azim.

She indicated that the conference’s recommendations will be published internationally, with the development of a road map for national cooperation between various oncology centers, in coordination with the Egyptian Health Council, the Supreme National Committee for Patient Safety, and the Supreme Council of University Hospitals, with the aim of unifying training programs and treatment plans and achieving the highest survival rates for patients according to the latest international studies, taking into account the economic dimensions of Egypt and developing countries.
