The rapid intervention within the Saudi health care model contributed to ending the suffering of a patient who had lasted four years as a result of a chronic bacterial infection in the shin bone, after a long treatment journey that included several surgical interventions in various health facilities, where a medical team at King Abdulaziz Hospital in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, a member of the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Health Cluster, was able to repair large bone defects, stimulate bone growth, and restore its natural function through the use of advanced surgical technology.
Receiving the patient and speed of treatment
He explained Mecca Health Complex that the patient underwent a comprehensive and accurate medical evaluation upon his reception, which included conducting the necessary laboratory tests, taking bone samples, in addition to performing advanced diagnostic radiological examinations, and based on the results, an integrated treatment plan was prepared in accordance with the latest approved medical standards and protocols.
He added that the treating medical team applied the Masquelet Technique (Masquelet Technique) known as Induced Membrane Technique (Induced Membrane Technique – IMT) It is from Advanced surgical techniques that are used in two stages to reconstruct large bone defects resulting from chronic infections, complex injuries, or tumor resection.
Surgery details
The health group stated that the first stage included placing a temporary cement spacer at the site of the bone defect with the aim of forming a biological membrane that stimulates the bone healing process, while the second stage included removing the spacer and filling the area with a suitable bone graft, which contributed to stimulating bone growth and restoring its natural function, as the patient’s health condition witnessed a noticeable improvement, and he is currently under medical follow-up and is recovering.
