United Nations: The legacy of colonialism has left deep scars, but the world has come a long way

But the Secretary-General also stressed that the world has come a long way, “More than 100 countries have gained their independence since 1945. Today, more people enjoy the right to self-determination and dignity.”.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations reminded that: “Decolonization has been a goal of the United Nations since its inception.”. He pointed out that although much has changed for the better, there is still work to be done.

This came in his speech at the opening of the 2026 session meeting Special Committee on Decolonization Today, Monday, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the speech was delivered on his behalf by his Chief of Staff, Earl Courtenay Rattray.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations explained the need for three priorities to guide the fate of the 17 regions that are still non-self-governing, as follows:

⬅️ First, a comprehensive dialogue between non-self-governing regions, administrative bodies, member states, and all concerned parties.

⬅️ Secondly, the pivotal role of youth. Vision and leadership of the next generation are vital to building a productive and inclusive future.

⬅️ Third, the urgent need for climate action.

At the end of the speech, the Secretary-General said: “Let us continue to work tirelessly, as one team, to advance decolonization for all.”.
