The Inter-Parliamentary Union adopts the UAE proposal to issue a resolution on enhancing maritime security and preserving maritime navigation

ISTANBUL, April 20, 2017 (WAM) – The General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union adopted the United Arab Emirates’ proposal submitted by the delegation of the Federal National Council, to issue a resolution entitled “Strengthening maritime security and protecting vital infrastructure in times of conflict: The role of parliaments in preserving international navigation and global economic stability,” during the meetings of the 152nd General Assembly of the Union held in Istanbul.

The General Assembly also approved the selection of His Excellency Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, member of the Federal National Council, as rapporteur of the draft resolution that will be adopted at the 154th Assembly meeting of the Federation, where His Excellency stressed that raising this issue comes from a clear realization that contemporary conflicts no longer remain confined within its direct borders, but rather their effects extend to sea lanes, supply chains, energy facilities, and basic services, making it an issue directly linked to international peace and security.

He explained that this issue addresses a very important issue, which is protecting international navigation, preserving vital infrastructure, and reducing the broad economic and humanitarian repercussions that result from conflicts extending beyond their immediate arenas, pointing out that when sea lanes are threatened, or ports are targeted, the impact is not limited to a specific country, but rather extends to the global economy, trade movement, energy security, the safety of supply chains, and the arrival of humanitarian aid.

He added that this issue gives parliaments a real opportunity to contribute to protecting international stability, preserving global economic interests, and enhancing the ability of countries to confront the increasing risks associated with contemporary conflicts.

His Excellency Dr. Marwan Al Muhairi stressed the importance of supporting this issue, because it does not serve the interest of a specific country, but rather expresses a common collective interest, and responds to an escalating international challenge that requires responsible and effective parliamentary action.
