Younis Mahmoud, President of the Iraqi Football Association

Former Iraqi player Younis Mahmoud won the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Iraqi Football Association, in the elections that were held this Saturday evening inside the hall of the Al-Rashid Hotel in Baghdad, under the direct supervision of the Asian and International Football Confederations, amid a large presence of representatives of clubs and sports bodies.
According to the final counting results, Younis Mahmoud received 38 votes, compared to 20 votes for former president Adnan Darjal, making the latter lose the presidency of the federation after four years he spent leading Iraqi football.
The hall witnessed a charged atmosphere after the announcement of the results, as Adnan Darjal left his place in a state of anger, and showed signs of dissatisfaction with the course of the electoral process, based on what was circulated by some of those present inside the hall.
Media sources from within the electoral conference also indicated that there were unofficial talks indicating the possibility of Darjal heading to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to file an appeal related to the transparency of electoral procedures, without any official confirmation being issued yet.
The elections were held under the supervision of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation, in an atmosphere described as decisive, ending with the official transfer of the presidency of the Iraqi Football Association to Younis Mahmoud.
