Mexico does not know the loss in the World Cup in Mexico City

The Mexico national team maintained its unbeaten record at Mexico City Stadium (formerly Azteca) in the World Cup.

The Mexican national team defeated the South African national team, 2-0, on Thursday evening, at the opening of the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

Julián Quiñones opened the scoring for Mexico in the ninth minute, before Raul Jimenez added the second goal in the 67th minute of the match, which witnessed three expulsions, two for the South African national team and one for the Mexican national team.

This became the ninth match in a row that the Mexican national team played on this stadium in the World Cup, and did not suffer a loss during the actual playing time in the World Cup.

Before the opening of the tournament in 2026, Mexico, which is considered the first country in history to host three World Cups, played 8 World Cup matches at Mexico City Stadium (formerly Azteca) in the Mexican capital.

During the previous eight matches at this stadium in the World Cup, Mexico achieved 5 victories, while it tied in three matches, including a match in the qualifying rounds that it was unable to decide in its favor due to penalty kicks.

Mexico played three matches at this stadium when it organized the 1970 World Cup, where it tied 0-0 with the Soviet Union, before winning 4-0 and 1-0 over El Salvador and Belgium, respectively, in the group stage of the tournament.

When Mexico moved away from this stadium in the 1970 World Cup, the Latin country quickly bid farewell to the World Cup, after losing 1/4 to the Italian national team in the quarter-finals, which was held at the Estadio Luis Dosal stadium in Toluca.

In the 1986 World Cup, Mexico won 2-1 over Belgium and 1-0 over Iraq, and tied 1-1 with Paraguay in the group stage at Mexico City Stadium, before winning 2-0 over Bulgaria in the round of 16 at the same stadium.

In regular and extra time, Mexico tied without goals with West Germany in the quarter-finals, also in Mexico City, so the two teams decided to go to penalty kicks, which in the end smiled at the European team, which made its way in that edition, which saw it achieve second place.
