Ecuador’s coach resigns after exiting the World Cup

Ecuador’s national football team coach, Sebastian Becasese, announced his resignation following the team’s exit from the World Cup.

Bekasisi (45 years old) said after losing to Mexico with two clean goals in the 32nd draw on Wednesday: “Results are what matters, and today I must bid farewell to a beautiful and wonderful family.”

Bekasisi said that he feels “great gratitude, great calm and inner peace, because we gave everything we had.”

Against Mexico, the Ecuadorian team seemed clearly lower in level, especially in the first half, after they trailed by two clean goals a little more than half an hour after the start of the match.

The Ecuadorian national team qualified for the round of 32 after defeating the German national team 2-1 in its last match in the group stage.

Bekasisi, who took over as coach of the national team in August 2024, said: “All we were concerned about was achieving the goal we set for ourselves, but this is football.”

He added: “I think we are leaving a legacy behind us. It was a wonderful adventure, but it ended with a bittersweet ending.”

He stressed: “I will spend some time with my family now, get some rest, and think about what I could have done better.”
