"National navigation" Construction of two giant bulk vessels of 82 thousand tons begins in China

The Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Shipping Company, celebrated a new achievement in the process of modernizing the Egyptian commercial fleet, by launching a hull steel cutting ceremony to begin the construction of two giant “Kamsarmax” dry bulk ships, each with a capacity of 82,000 dwt.

 

 

The ceremony took place at the Jiangsu Hantong Shipyard.

 

 

The ceremony was attended by Mohammed Suleiman Metwally, Managing Director of the National Shipping Company, on behalf of Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, along with senior executives from the Hantong Shipyard headed by Ming Zhengjun, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Shipping Company. Management.

 

Mohamed Suleiman Metwally, in his speech during the celebration activities, stressed that this project represents a deepening and expansion of a successful and well-established partnership between the National Navigation Company and the Hantung Shipyard, which was strengthened in January 2024 with the delivery of the ship “Wadi Al-Arish”. Of the same model, which has proven a high level of quality, professionalism and reliability during service. He added that the two new ships – Which were contracted in April 2024 and are scheduled to be delivered in 2026 – They are an advanced example of shipbuilding technology. The deadweight capacity of each ship is 82,000 tons, its length is 229 metres, its width is 32.26 metres, and its draft is 14.5 metres. The two ships rely on a MAN B&W main engine with a power of 7,490 kilowatts, equipped with advanced emission control systems, which ensures full compliance with current and future global environmental standards, while achieving the highest levels of operational efficiency.

 

Metwally indicated that the delivery of these two ships, in addition to the two “Kamsarmax” ships Two more, with a capacity of 82,000 dwt each, were contracted during the year 2025 with the same arsenal for delivery in 2028, meaning that the National Navigation Company will have completed the renewal and modernization of about 54% of its owned fleet during the last three years. He pointed out that this modernization is taking place from the company’s own liquidity, and represents a major step towards achieving the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development, and towards implementing the Ministry of Transport’s plan to restore the strength of the Egyptian commercial fleet, in implementation of the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to restore the strength and competitiveness of the Egyptian commercial fleet globally.

 

It is planned that the fleet will reach forty ships by 2030, capable of transporting thirty million tons of various goods annually, instead of twenty ships. With a capacity to transport nine million tons of goods, to serve strategic goods, including grains, petroleum, and passengers, between Egypt and the rest of the world. It is worth noting that the National Navigation Company is a leading company in the field of maritime transport in the Middle East, and is affiliated with the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, and its activity is focused on transporting dry bulk goods.

 

The company was established in 1981 as an Egyptian joint stock company subject to the Investment and Free Zones Law, and seeks to enhance the position of the Egyptian commercial fleet globally.
